Virtual Power Plant
Get paid to power your community.
SunStrong’s Virtual Power Plant turns your battery into a source of revenue while helping keep the grid strong for everyone.
See how you’re rewardedThe basics
Think of it as getting rewarded for teamwork on the grid.
A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) connects thousands of home batteries so they can act as one large, flexible energy resource.
When the grid comes under stress, like during a summer heat wave or a period of high demand, SunStrong can draw small amounts of stored energy from participating batteries to help keep the power on — and pays you a reward for it. No new power plants. No new infrastructure. No fuel burned.
Your battery still does its job first: keeping your home powered when you need it. Reserve settings are always respected, and events aren’t called during severe weather. SunStrong handles everything else automatically — enrollment, dispatch, performance tracking, and rewards.
Your backup comes first.
Your battery’s reserve settings are always respected.
Individual batteries. Collective power.
How it works
A simple process.
-
You’re enrolled.
Automatically, if you’re a qualifying customer with a compatible battery in an area where SunStrong operates a VPP — or opt in anytime.
-
The grid needs help.
Your utility or grid operator calls a “dispatch event” during periods of high demand.
-
Your battery responds.
SunStrong signals it automatically — powering your home or sending energy back to the grid. Your backup protection stays intact.
-
You earn rewards.
Rewards are typically applied as a bill credit for a lease or a loan reduction after SunStrong validates your participation and receives payment from program partners. Your program terms explain the rates and timing.
Am I eligible? Eligibility is based on factors such as your location, utility, battery compatibility, and the requirements of the specific VPP program. If you qualify, you may be automatically enrolled or have the option to opt in. Ask about enrollment
Who benefits
More value. All around.
For Homeowners
- Get paid for power you’re already storing. Rewards are delivered automatically as a bill credit or loan reduction.

For Power Companies
& Grid Operators
- A dispatchable resource, ready when it’s needed. Home batteries respond like a traditional power plant, without new generation or infrastructure.
- Help reduce rotating outages. VPP dispatch events ease the capacity shortfalls and peak-demand conditions that cause them.
- One accountable partner. SunStrong manages enrollment, communication, performance validation, and regulatory reporting.
- Proven at scale. 50+ dispatch events delivered in 2026 across 50,000+ enrolled systems, with 900+ MWh of nameplate energy and 350+ MW of nameplate power.
For Local Governments
& Regulators
- Supports public reliability goals. Programs like Puerto Rico’s CBES and California’s DSGS were built with regulators to reduce the risk of outages during grid stress.
- Operates under regulatory oversight. Programs have transparent complaint and escalation paths, including PREB Regulation 8543 and the CEC’s Strategic Reliability Reserve.
- Builds resilience without new infrastructure or public capital. Programs use storage residents have already installed.
- A track record of results. SunStrong’s Puerto Rico VPP delivered more than 4 GWh to the local grid during emergency events so far in 2026.
For Capital Partners
- Turns existing hardware into ongoing revenue. Incremental value from batteries already in the field, with no new capital deployment required.
- Reduces delinquency risk through automatic and direct customer payments.
- Backed by SunStrong’s operational discipline. The same accountability we apply as an independent asset manager to every asset class we manage.
- Strengthens our license to operate. Acting as a strong community partner and doing our part to be a good neighbor.
- Demonstrated scale. More than 50,000 systems enrolled and nearly $3M paid to customers in the most recent performance cycle.
